# The First 15 Seconds: What Publishers and Music Supervisors Actually Hear

Keith Mohr September 25, 2026

I have sat on both sides of the desk. I have pitched songs and I have been pitched to. And I can tell you the uncomfortable truth: nobody in this business listens to your whole song on the first pass.

They listen to the first fifteen seconds. Sometimes less.

That is not cruelty. It is math. A music supervisor working a show gets hundreds of submissions per episode. A publisher with an open call gets thousands. Fifteen seconds per song is the only way the pile ever gets smaller.

What they are actually listening for

In those fifteen seconds, a gatekeeper is answering three questions, usually without realizing it:

**1. Is this professional?** Not polished-for-radio professional. Competent professional. Is the recording clean enough? Is the vocal in tune? Does this person take their own work seriously? A rough demo can pass this test. A sloppy one cannot.

**2. Do I know what this is?** Within seconds they need to place your song. Genre, mood, tempo, use case. If fifteen seconds in they still cannot tell whether it is a driving anthem or a ballad, you have made their job harder, and easier to say no.

**3. Is there a reason to keep listening?** Something has to promise a payoff. A hook in the intro, an interesting voice, a lyric that lands immediately. Not the whole payoff. Just a down payment that says the chorus will be worth the wait.

The intro problem

Here is where most songs fail the test: the intro. Songwriters love intros. We write eight bars of atmosphere, a slow build, a moody guitar figure that sets the scene. And every one of those bars is time the gatekeeper is not hearing your song.

Modern standards are brutal. For sync and pitching purposes, your vocal should be in within ten to fifteen seconds, and something hooky should happen almost immediately. That does not mean every song needs a cold open. It means every second before the vocal arrives has to earn its keep.

Go listen to the songs actually getting placed in shows and ads right now. Count the seconds before the vocal. You will rarely count past ten.

The skip test

Try this tonight. Play your song for someone who has never heard it. Watch their face for the first fifteen seconds. Do not ask what they think afterward. Watch. You will see the exact moment they decide whether to lean in or check out.

That moment is what a publisher sees too. They just have a skip button.

What this is not

This is not an argument for making every song sound the same, or for chopping the soul out of your arrangement. A slow song can still pass the fifteen-second test. A ballad can hook someone in five seconds with the right first line. The test is not about tempo. It is about intention. Did you design those first fifteen seconds, or did they just happen?

Gatekeepers can tell the difference. So can listeners, even the ones who could never explain why they skipped.

If you want to know exactly how your intro holds up, including a timed analysis of when your vocal enters and whether your opening earns the listener's attention, send your song through Song Refiners. The first review is free, and we measure intro timing down to the second.
