# You Can't Play the Game If You Don't Know the Score

Picture a baseball stadium on a warm summer night. The lights are blazing, the crowd is buzzing, two teams are on the field — but look up at the scoreboard and all you see is question marks. Every inning: **?** Every run, every hit, every out: **?**

Would you keep watching? Would either team know how to play?

Of course not. Without a score, there's no strategy. No adjustments. No way to know if you're winning or losing — or how much ground you need to make up in the final innings.

Now ask yourself this: _Is that how you've been approaching your songwriting career?_

* * *

**The Dirty Secret Nobody Tells Songwriters**

Most songwriters go their entire careers without ever getting a real, honest, objective score on their work.

They finish a song, play it for friends and family, and hear — _"That's amazing! You should totally record that."_ They post it online and get heart emojis. They play it at an open mic and get polite applause.

None of that is a score. That's a standing ovation for a game that hasn't been played yet.

The music industry, meanwhile, is running a completely different scorecard. Publishers, A&R reps, playlist curators, and label scouts hear tens of thousands of songs every year. They're evaluating melody, lyric craft, structure, commercial appeal, production quality, and market fit — all at the same time, in under 30 seconds. And they're doing it against an industry standard that most independent songwriters have never even been told exists.

That's the gap. And that gap is costing you time, money, and momentum.

* * *

**What a Real Song Score Looks Like**

At Song Refiners, we built an evaluation system around the same standards the industry actually uses — not a feel-good rubric designed to keep you coming back, but a real, honest number with real, honest feedback.

Every song is scored across seven categories:

- **Overall Score** — The holistic listening experience. How does it all come together?

- **Song Title** — Hook value, memorability, searchability. Does it make someone want to press play?

- **Top Line** — Do your opening lyrics set the stage and compel the listener to keep going?

- **Lyrics** — Imagery, structure, emotional resonance. Are the words doing real work, or just filling space?

- **Arrangement** — Structure, flow, dynamics, and transitions. Does the song build? Does the bridge earn its place?

- **Production** — Mix quality, sonic choices, and polish. For demos, this becomes your production roadmap.

- **Commercial Potential** — Market readiness, playlist fit, and industry appeal.

Each category gets a score. Each score comes with specific, timestamped feedback — not vague encouragement, but actionable coaching that tells you exactly what's working and exactly what needs to change.

* * *

**What the Numbers Mean**

Here's what the Song Refiners scoring scale looks like in plain language:

**ScoreRatingWhat It Means**

**90–99 - Exceptional:** Industry-grade craft. Eligible for Showcase and Radio Airplay.

**80–89 - Very Strong:** Minor refinements away from greatness. Rock-solid foundation.

**70–79 - Solid:** Competent but missing that spark of distinctiveness.

**60–69 - Promising:** The bones are there — clear potential with clear gaps.

**<60 - Needs Rethinking:** Time to step back and rebuild from the ground up.

Here's the thing most songwriters don't want to hear — but need to: _a score below 70 isn't a failure. It's a roadmap._ It tells you exactly which innings you're losing, so you can make adjustments before the game is over.

A score above 80? That's when you start making moves with confidence.

* * *

**Why Honest Feedback Is the Most Valuable Thing in Music**

The music industry is full of people who will tell you what you want to hear — vocal coaches who never critique, co-writers who don't want to rock the boat, managers who are afraid to lose a client. That culture of false encouragement isn't kindness. It's the reason talented songwriters waste years pitching songs that aren't ready, recording tracks that miss the mark, and spending money they can't afford on productions that were never going to land.

Song Refiners was built on a different premise: **you deserve the truth about your song.** Not cruelty — honesty. Specific, useful, actionable honesty that respects your craft and your time.

No inflated scores. No ghostwriting. No generic feedback. Just your real score.

* * *

**Your First Score Is Free**

Here's the best part: you don't have to take our word for any of this.

When you sign up for Song Refiners, your first review — the **Quick Taste** — is completely free. No credit card. No commitment. Just submit your song and within about an hour, you'll have a headline score, an overall assessment, and 1–2 sentences of feedback per section.

It's enough to tell you where you really stand. And if what you see makes you want to go deeper, the **Standard Review** gives you all 7 scored categories, timestamped feedback, coaching questions, and actionable next steps. The **Deep Dive** goes 50% further.

But start with the free one. Find out your score. Because you can't play the game if you don't know the score — and now you have no excuse not to know.
