Gatekeeper

Songwriters love to talk about “gatekeepers.”

It’s a convenient word for anyone we think is blocking our success. But who are these gatekeepers in the music industry, really?

Is it the executives in three‑piece suits, puffing cigars and counting all the money they’re supposedly stealing from writers and artists? Is it the local radio DJ who won’t play your “hit”? The friend of a friend of a friend who never replies to your email with ten unsolicited songs attached? Are they the ones truly holding the keys?

Maybe you’d say it’s the streaming platforms that won’t pay you what you believe your music is worth. Or all the AI song tools cranking out what you see as “slop,” flooding the landscape and burying your carefully crafted work.

But what if the real gatekeeper…is you?

What if the biggest barrier between your songs and your potential isn’t “them,” but a blaming spirit and a victim mentality that slowly choke your creativity?

Think of creativity like a conduit from the Creator. Without getting overly spiritual, let’s be honest: humans aren’t nearly as original as we like to think. The best ideas feel like they come from beyond us—whether or not you believe in a “higher power.”

When a critical, bitter, victim mindset settles into your soul, it clogs that conduit. Instead of drawing from something deeper and fresher, you’re left creating only from your own mind—limited to recycling what it has already absorbed and can remember.

So before you decide that a label exec, DJ, playlist curator, or AI model is the reason your songs aren’t gaining traction, pause and ask an uncomfortable question:

Is the gatekeeper actually…
you?

Why not meet me in the middle? That is the path where true creativity is found.
