Every review scores your song across six categories: Title, Top Line, Lyrics, Arrangement, Production, and Commercial Potential, plus an Overall Score. You get section-by-section feedback, so you know whether the problem is your second verse or your bridge. And you get an action plan, meaning specific changes to make rather than vague encouragement.
Then you make the changes, resubmit, and watch the score move. That last part is what actually makes you better.
Who is behind it
Song Refiners was built by Keith Mohr, who has spent over thirty years in the music business and has worn most of the hats.
He owned and operated a recording studio in Pennsylvania, where the hard rock group Halestorm recorded some of their earliest songs, and mixed a project for Rick Derringer of "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo." He built IndieHeaven, one of the first websites for independent artists to promote themselves, and the first to offer single-song downloads, before Apple or MP3.com.
After moving to Nashville in 2003 he launched Nashville Rising Song, a songwriter competition that ran until 2020 and put unknown writers on major Nashville stages. Kelsea Ballerini, now a Grand Ole Opry member, came through it. So did Gayle, and Jason Wyatt of The Lost Trailers.
The scoring rubric behind every review comes out of those thirty years, not out of a model guessing what a good song sounds like.
Honest, which means sometimes unwelcome
Your friends will tell you it is great. Your co-writer has a stake in it being great. The Facebook group will give you fourteen likes and no useful information.
We will tell you what is actually wrong with it.
That is not cruelty, it is the only feedback worth paying for. Every review explains its reasoning, so you are never left with a low score and no idea why. You can disagree with us, and members can formally appeal a score.
Built for how songwriters actually work
Traditional critique services are priced for one song at a time. Twenty-five or thirty dollars a review means you submit when you think you are finished, read the feedback once, and move on.
That is backwards. Songs get better through revision, and revision only happens when feedback is cheap enough to use constantly.
